Marietta First United Methodist Church

North Georgia Conference Names MFUMC Preschool a School of Excellence

In its 50-plus years of history, Weekday Ministry Preschool and Kindergarten has sought a level of excellence unmatched in the Marietta community. Most recently, Weekday Ministry was re-certified as a School of Excellence by the United Methodist Church North Georgia Conference of Preschools. The school is pursuing re-accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS/AdvancEd) next spring, which makes it unique in the area for church-based, part-time early childhood education programs.

Weekday offers a morning program of play-based education for children ages 12 months (by September 1) through an academic half-day Kindergarten for children seeking more individualized instruction and attention. A regular day for our younger students is 9:00 a.m. to noon. Kindergarteners stay until 1:00 p.m.

Our developmentally appropriate curriculum includes Zoophonics as an introduction to letters and letter sounds beginning at age two, Handwriting Without Tears for our students beginning at age three through Kindergarten, SMART Phonics and Everday Math for our kindergarten students. Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students benefit from a variety of year-round enrichment classes in Art, Spanish and Science. All of our students participate in Music on a weekly basis, while Threes and up also enjoy weekly Movement classes. Playground time is an important part of a child’s overall development, and the children of Weekday have that opportunity daily (weather permitting) on exceptional Hasley-designed equipment. Snack time is valued not only for nutrition, but for social development as well. Chapel time for our older students is provided monthly, and is designed to introduce children to basic spiritual concepts through stories, songs and Bible verses. Each child in every classroom has monthly Bible verses presented to them within the context of their curriculum, and prayers are offered daily at snack time and during group time.

Weekday offers an optional afternoon extension, Lunch Bunch, where children bring a lunch and have supervised play from noon until 1:00 p.m. Lunch Bunch Plus offers additional enrichment activities from yoga to “Construction Kids”, cooking to crafts. In conjunction with First United Methodist Church’s Children’s Ministries, our students also have access to ballet, hip-hop, tumbling, and tennis lessons.

As this new generation of children begin their educational journey, they are faced with challenges as “digital natives” needing to learn additional skills above and beyond the traditional “hands-on” experiences. Weekday provides this opportunity to learn using state-of-the-art technology—SMART Board in the Kindergarten, iPads in our Pre-Kindergarten and Threes. All teachers have access to a variety of media resources for use in their classes, including the newly established Linda LeSeuer Library.

Parent involvement is cherished at Weekday. We have regular opportunities for parents to volunteer in classrooms as room parents or party parents, there are occasional “coffee talk” events which may include a guest speaker or an opportunity to have conversation with the director. Our fall social, Movie Night in the Park, gives families an opportunity to gather together over pizza, games and a movie in the unique setting of the Park on Polk. Our spring social and fundraiser, Art From the Heart is a great adults-only, off-campus event where parents can gather and enjoy food, entertainment, and a silent-auction of child-created and professional works of art. Proceeds from this event benefit the children of Weekday by providing special equipment and learning materials.
