Music Ministry NewsInterested in Children, Youth, or Adult Choirs?
January is a great time to join or rejoin one of our choirs. Find a choir that is a right fit for you and share your voice!
Children
Music is among humanity's most essential and enriching experiences. Children are especially aware of music and delight in the simple pleasure of rhythm and melody. Like a mother that sings to her child, the Church has taught her children to sing their faith--a powerful combination of heart and voice which has sustained countless generations.
Providing early musical experiences to children is a scientifically recognized "jump start" for brain development and cognitive ability. At Marietta FUMC, we celebrate this miracle of learning and connect it with our soul's longing to worship the Creator of all good things.
Our Children's Choirs rehearse on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. Contact Arie Motschman at ext. 7818.
Youth
Youth Choir is perfect for students from the 6th-12th grade who enjoy a variety of choral music ranging from gospel to contemporary to Renaissance. The Youth Choir participates regularly in worship, appears in major festivals (such as the "Nine Lessons and Carols") and travels on exciting concert tours in the spring. The Youth Choir rehearses on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. Contact Bryan Black at ext. 7815.
Adults
The Adult Choir is a mixed, non-auditioned chorus that leads the congregation in the two morning worship services. Members may choose to sing at either (or both) services depending on their personal schedules. Selections are chosen that reflect the seasons and topics of the liturgical year drawing from a large variety of musical streams including gospel, traditional folk, spirituals, shape-note, Renaissance and classical. Major presentations include the annual "Service of Nine Lessons and Carols" and Sacred Spring Concerts, which have featured John Leavitt's "Requiem", W.A. Mozart's "Coronation Mass," Mendelssohn's "Hymn of Praise," John Rutter's "Requiem", and the immortal Fauré "Requiem."
Rehearsal schedule Wednesday Rehearsals 7:00-8:30 p.m. (extended rehearsals near Easter and Christmas) Room 263 Sings for 9:00 a.m. and/or 11:15 a.m. Worship A special "Pew Parent" ministry for elementary age children provides care for your child while you sing. Contact Bryan Black at ext. 7815.

Experience Camp Meeting in the Park on Polk
Meridian Herald presents its 13th annual camp meeting service, Sunday, October 16 at 6:00 pm. There is no admission and everyone is welcome. In these times of financial and social turmoil, this service, offering spiritual traditions and music from our mothers and fathers, invites our return to the tried and true, and our renewed faith in God's providence. On this foundation, may we proceed with confidence through the challenges ahead.
The evening will open with 30 minutes of music, leading into the service of prayer, preaching, and singing. Music led by the Meridian Chorale and soloists as well as musicians from MFUMC, will include time-honored gospel hymns, camp meeting spirituals and chorale arrangements of classic hymns by Steven Darsey. Dr. Sam Matthews will preach.
In addition to great singing and preaching, you will enjoy the camp meeting setting at our outdoor pavilion. Camp meetings began in the 19th century south when farmers, after the crops were laid, would go "camping" with their families and friends for a week or more. The days and evenings were filled with fiery preaching and impassioned singing of Gospel songs.
Chairs will be available, but you are encouraged to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. In case of rain, the service will take place in the Sanctuary. Nursery is provided. For more information contact Bryan Black at ext. 7815.
What Does it Mean to Live God's Song? September 13 It is an invitation to sing and move in time with the community of faith. It is a journey from fear towards faith. One Faith, Many Voices by Bryan Black For several years our Music Ministry has taken the month of August to celebrate the various traditions of sacred music that contribute to our worship. These various "streams" are always present but generally mixed and mingled. During "One Faith, Many Voices" we have an opportunity to build an entire worship service around one tradition and celebrate its unique heritage and sound.
August 14- "African American" will feature "Come, Let Us Worship" by Patrick Bradley, a spiritual by the Women's Ensemble, and "Hold The Light" led by our friend Deacon George Williams from Zion Baptist Church.
August 21- "Classical" will highlight "How Lovely Are The Messengers" by Felix Mendelssohn and a solo piano piece by Andrew Taylor.
August 28- "Bluegrass" presents the in-house band fondly known as The Whitlock Ramblers. Selections will include "I'll Pass Over Thee," "Away Over In The Promised Land," "Life's Railway To Heaven" and "So Happy I'll Be" by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.
On Sunday, Sept. 11 the Music Ministry, in cooperation with the Children's Ministry, will inaugurate Sunday morning "Pew Parents" and a special Wednesday night activity for elementary age children whose parents serve as musical leaders in worship. We understand the challenge of dedicating time and talents to God while also attending to family needs and work. This ministry is dedicated to sharing that challenge with you and making ministry possible.
As always, you are warmly invited to participate in Marietta First's ministry of music whether you sing, play an instrument or have skills as a handbell ringer. All rehearsals are open to visitors and childcare is always provided. Join us as we draw closer to God and widen His circle. Children, church and music.
