Chorister Choir(Grades 3-5)
Children in Chorister Choir use all they have learned from previous experiences to become leaders in worship and role models for younger singers. A strong emphasis on sight-singing and ear training prepares them for new challenges such as complex rhythms and singing in harmony. Rehearsals are shaped around the RSCM Voice for Life (see earlier explanation) training program that promotes peer leadership, individual achievement, musical excellence and commitment to the life of the choir. In addition to serving in worship on the second Sunday of the month, the choir sings for “Lessons and Carols” and presents a Wednesday night “musicale” in the spring. Late spring features “Music and More,” a dynamic exploration of musical concepts and ministry. When singing in worship, all singers are expected to remain in that worship service. Rehearsal schedule (August - May) With our ever-growing children’s choir program, it is imperative that we know where children are at all times when they are in our care. If you have a special reason to deviate from these procedures, please discuss it with your children’s choir director and be sure to give a written note to your children’s choir director before the worship service. The Royal School of Church Music - MFUMC became an affiliate member of the Royal School of Church Music in the fall of 2004. This organization, founded in the 1920's by the organist of Westminster Abbey, connects us with hundreds of choirs and thousands of singers around the world who pledge to "sing with the spirit and also with understanding." That motto, taken from the Psalms, is at the heart of Voice for Life -- a graded training "scheme" that inspires singers to develop their vocal instrument, become familiar with musical notation, learn to sing music at sight, analyze compositions and be aware of how their individual contributions determine the ultimate effectiveness of our choir. Upon completion of certain targets, the singer is awarded a medal and colored ribbon corresponding to their achievement level which is worn during performances and services. Participation is self-paced.
