MERIDIAN HERALD, HISTORIC MARIETTA FIRST UMC
HOLD TRADITIONAL OUTDOOR CAMP MEETING SERVICE
Sunday, September 26
Pre-service music at 6:30 p.m.
Service begins at 7:00 p.m.

Meridian Herald presents its 13th annual Higher Ground: Camp Meeting Service on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at 6:30pm in the beautiful outdoor pavilion at Marietta First United Methodist Church.  Senior Pastor of Marietta First, Dr. Sam Matthews, will preach.

Music by the Marietta First Adult Choir, led by Bryan Black, and the Meridian Chorale and soloists will include time-honored gospel hymns, camp meeting spirituals and chorale arrangements of classic hymns by Steven Darsey.  Renowned Atlanta pianist Jim Gibson will play.

There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome. The evening will open with 30 minutes of music, leading into the service of prayer, preaching, and singing. After the service, attendees will enjoy warm fellowship and refreshments on the grounds. Chairs will be available, but there will also be space for personal lawn chairs and blankets.  In case of rain, the service will take place in the sanctuary.

Camp meetings began in the 19th century south, when farmers, after the crops were laid by, would go "camping” with their families and friends for a week or more. The days and evenings were filled with fiery preaching and impassioned singing of Gospel songs.
