Five Scouts Earn the Rank of Eagle Scout
The United Methodist Men’s group sponsors Boy Scout Troop 277 and Cub Scout Pack 277 at the Marietta First United Methodist church. The Troop has a long and storied history dating back to 1911, with an active Troop being a part of Marietta First United Methodist since 1922. The Troop has been a positive influence in the life of many youth, and adults, over the years. Over these many years, only 110 Scouts have achieved the highest Scouting rank, that of Eagle. On Sunday, June 27 a Court of Honor will be conducted in the reception hall to honor the most recent five Eagle Scouts from Troop 277 that have joined the brotherhood of Eagles.
The Scouts being awarded their Eagle rank are: Daniel Dupree, Zachary Fisher, Joshua Lee, Preston Olds, Alex Runge. All of these young men completed many skill, leadership and community service requirements on their path to Eagle. Three of these Scouts planned and completed their Eagle projects here on the church grounds. Daniel Dupree was responsible for the prayer labyrinth located behind the white house. Identifying all of the trees in the new church park, marking many of them for a walking trail, and constructing the bulletin board standing at the entrance to the park pavilion was Josh Lee’s project. Preston Olds led the effort that resulted in the outdoor classroom that can be easily accessed in the park just a short distance from the log cabin. These projects will continue to serve church members and others in the community for many years to come. Zachary and Alex built and installed several benches and picnic tables at Hickory Hills Elementary School.
Three Scoutmasters have served in that role during the time these five Scouts entered the program. The current Troop 277 Scoutmaster is Alan Dupree. Bill Allred served as Scoutmaster for three years before Alan. Pat Bonito was the long time Scoutmaster before Bill, and was responsible for mentoring many Scouts and adults through the program. Many other dedicated adult leaders helped guide these Scouts along their path to Eagle.
If you have or know of boys that are of Scouting age (6 – 17), I could highly recommend the pack for younger boys and the Troop for older boys that meet here at the church. Please join me in congratulating these five fine young men on their accomplishment.
