The Face of Homelessness Might Not Be What You Think
A growing number of homeless people seeking assistance from local agencies are women
according to a recent survey completed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The rise of instability of housing among women creates particularly precarious positions for mothers with children.  There are a variety of reasons that people become homeless are find themselves at risk of being homeless.  Addiction is certainly a factor for many people.

MFUMC member Rhea Pridgen serves as volunteer coordinator for the Women’s Extension and is dedicated to helping reverse the trend of homelessness in women.  You can join the movement by helping those facing the loss of their home because of addiction find support and relationships.

The Extension is a yearlong rehabilitation program for homeless, addicted, Cobb County residents.  The Men’s Campus on Church Street Extension has 40 spaces and the Women’s Campus near the Marietta Square on Holiday St. has 20 spaces.

You are invited to take part in the ministry of the extension through a variety of volunteer opportunities.  At the Women’s Extension you can help women find recovery and reestablish their homes by:
  • Helping find job opportunities for the women
  • Getting used furniture and household items for women when they graduate
  • Serving as receptionist and answering phone (great priority)
  • Sharing a special skill
  • Providing something small or big from the “needs list”
  • Taking women to an appointment
  • Organizing the special supplies cabinets
  • Providing a dinner for the women.
Hours are tailored to the volunteer’s available time. Please call  Rhea Pridgen h. 770-514-5045 or c. 404-402-5566.
