Baptism

Baptism initiates a covenant of relationship between God and the baptized person and between the church and the person. When you are baptized or affirm your baptism, the congregation enacts God's grace toward you and welcomes you into the community of faith. As a response to God's gracious initiative, you will be asked to pledge your loyalty to the life and ministries of The United Methodist Church and to promise to uphold the local church with your prayers, presence, gifts and service. As a baptized Christian, you will be part of the universal church and part of a particular community of Christians where you are known and watched over in love.

Talk with one of our pastors about the journey of becoming a Christian and a member of The United Methodist Church. They will be able to answer your questions and help you discern what next steps you want to take.

Please contact Allen Barbee to make baptism arrangements- allenbarbee@mariettafumc.org

Communion
While Baptism marks the beginning of the Christian life, the Eucharist, or Holy Communion sustains the Christian life. We celebrate Holy Communion as the remembrance of all God has done in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our communion table is open to all who profess Jesus Christ as Lord regardless of denomination. Join us for Communion every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel.

Weddings

The wedding ceremony is a worship service in which God's love is celebrated and the lordship of Jesus Christ is proclaimed.

The pastors and staff at Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) wish to extend every assistance to you to make your wedding a memorable and meaningful occasion.

Weddings are scheduled on a "first come, first served" basis with the Church Wedding Coordinator.

Weddings can be scheduled no earlier than one year in advance. Once a wedding is scheduled, all changes must be made in writing to the Coordinator.

MFUMC schedules no more than three weddings per day, at the set times of 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Weddings are performed only on Saturday. No weddings are performed on holidays or major holiday weekends.

Guest ministers are welcome to participate in wedding ceremonies. Our Senior Pastor or Senior Associate Pastor will extend an invitation to the guest pastor to assist him or the Senior Associate Pastor in the ceremony.

Requirements for Weddings at Marietta FUMC:

  1. Premarital counseling with the pastors is a requirement for marriage.
  2. All music selected should be conducive to the worship of God. The Church organist if available, plays for all weddings. If not available, you will be provided with the names of other organists familiar with our organ.
  3. Our Sanctuary seats approximately 750 guests. Our Chapel seats 70 comfortably.
  4. The Church has a Reception Hall that can be used for receptions. It can accommodate up to 250 guests. The bride must secure her own caterer.
  5. Dancing is allowed, but a "champagne toast" with alcohol is not permitted.
  6. Upon "send off" nothing may be thrown at the couple. You may blow bubbles.
  7. Receptions may be booked for the 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. ceremonies, only. All music for afternoon receptions must end at 6 p.m., as the guests for the evening wedding will begin arriving at that time.
  8. You will be assigned a Wedding Director. The Wedding Director will assist you in planning your ceremony. She works with the full authority of the MFUMC officiating pastor.
  9. Occasionally, we are asked about bridal consultants. The Wedding Director will be responsible for coordinating both rehearsal and wedding. A bridal consultant is welcome to help the bride and her attendants outside of the Church. However, she may only come as a guest for the rehearsal and the day of the wedding.

General Policies:

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the Church building, including restrooms; urns are provided by the outside doors.  No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the Church property.  Due to liabilities, aisle runners may not be used.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Beth Dawson, our Wedding Coordinator. Beth is available at the church Monday-Thursday, from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:00-11:00 a.m. She can be reached at 770-429-7800, ext. 7829.

Funerals

Funerals are worship services where we acknowledge death and bereavement, and celebrate the gospel of resurrection. Services are most likely scheduled in our Sanctuary, open to all members of the congregation to share in the remembrance. Our pastoral staff is available to offer assistance, consultation, and leadership. Contact one of our three pastors at any time for care and support in death, dying, and memorial service planning.
